  • Top speed: 370 kmh (230 mph)
  • 0-100kmh (60mph) in around 2.5 seconds. However, cars are designed for cornering speed instead of pure acceleration
  • Downforce pressure: Driving F1 upside down in a tunnel, above 240kmh (150mph)
  • Maximum forward acceleration is actually at 160 kmh (100mph) – before that tyres want to spin. Above that speed there is enough downforce from air flowing over the car so that there is more tyre grip than power to spin the tyres
  • Drivers have to stamp on brake pedal with around 120kg of force
  • Highest deceleration of a car is usually around 5g
  • The brake discs heat up 1,000C
  • The engine produces around 750hp. The electric part of the hybrid system another 160hp.
  • The internal combustion engine is a 1.6 litre, direct-injected V6, with a single turbo – limited by regulation to 15,000 rpm (250 revolutions per second)
  • A 1.6 litre F1 car has over 20 times the power to weight ratio of a 1.6 litre Ford Fiesta
  • At maximum speed on the straight the car runs 1mm above the ground
  • 10kg less weight in the car makes us 0.4s quicker per lap
  • 10kg less aerodynamic at 240 kmh (150mph) makes us 0.3s faster per lap
  • The weight is so low that in the car, the centre of gravity is around 250mm above the ground – less than the height of a piece of A4 paper
  • Minimum weight allowed is 702 kg (1,548 lb) including the driver but not fuel
  • Drivers lose 4kgs body weight during races in hot and humid conditions such as Malaysia
